Preheat the oven to 175 C.
Prepare the peach layer by draining and slicing a can of peaches (without liquid). Set aside.
In a bowl, mix together 1/4 cup sugar with cinnamon or nutmeg for flavoring. If you don't like cinnamon, feel free to omit it; it won't be overly strong anyway.
In another bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Add 2/3 cup fresh milk and 1 egg, then stir until well combined but not overmixed.
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in the oven-safe dish for about 30 seconds just to soften it. Then layer the melted butter on the bottom of the dish first.
Pour the batter mixture over the butter layer evenly, leaving space at the top. Do not mix or stir; simply spread the peaches on top of the batter layer.
Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes until golden brown and served hot.
